July 19, 2024

Dear Dr. Robert Gordon,

The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC) wishes to express its support for the University of Windsor’s (UWindsor) recent agreement with the Windsor Liberation Zone Team, finalized on July 10, 2024. This agreement represents a significant step toward promoting human rights and fairness within the academic community.

We commend  your decision because it highlights UWindsor’s commitment to aligning its investment practices with UN human rights standards. This initiative goes beyond mere compliance; it reflects our  shared values of justice and equality, ensuring that the university’s actions resonate with the principles we uphold as a Canadian society.

While it is natural for such a decision to encounter some opposition, CMPAC commends UWindsor’s steadfastness in its support for justice. By advocating for Palestinian students and addressing issues such as anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian racism, UWindsor demonstrates a genuine commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all. It is essential to recognize that supporting Palestinian rights does not diminish the importance of Jewish voices or experiences. We applaud your commitment to combating all forms of identity-based violence, including antisemitism, and its dedication to fostering dialogue that addresses the concerns of all students.

The focus on transparency and responsible investment also stands out as a pivotal move. By prioritizing human rights in its financial decisions, UWindsor actively builds trust and integrity within our community, reinforcing our collective responsibility toward ethical stewardship.

Equally important are the initiatives for trauma-informed counseling and the hiring of counselors from marginalized communities. These efforts are essential for creating a supportive atmosphere where all students, especially those from Palestinian, Muslim, and BIPOC backgrounds, can access the help they need to navigate their academic and personal challenges.

Moreover, by extending the Scholars at Risk program and establishing scholarships for students affected by conflicts, the University of Windsor is taking meaningful action to support those who face adversity. These initiatives not only highlight the university’s commitment to its students but also contribute to a broader culture of compassion and resilience.

As we move forward together, CMPAC hopes that UWindsor’s action has inspired other institutions to champion these values. Furthermore, CMPAC would like to extend its support that may be needed to support the implementation of the agreement. Again, thank you for standing up for justice.

Best regards,

Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC)
