On August 20th Day of Action organized by the Arms Embargo Now campaign, The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC) urgently calls on the Canadian government to implement an immediate and comprehensive two-way bilateral arms embargo on Israel. The escalation of Israeli violence in Gaza, resulting in over 40,000 civilian casualties and the destruction of a large percentage of essential infrastructure, necessitates a principled and decisive response from Canada.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) rendered an Advisory Opinion on July 19, 2024, unequivocally declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories – including the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza – as illegal under international law. This determination is rooted in the violation of the Palestinian right to self-determination and numerous breaches of international humanitarian law.

CMPAC is deeply troubled by Canada’s continued arms trade with Israel. This trade contributes directly to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and systemic discrimination against Palestinians. The ICJ’s findings provide a clear legal basis for Canada to reassess its policies and take concrete actions in alignment with its obligations under international law.

CMPAC makes the following specific demands of the Canadian government:

  • Immediate Suspension of All Arms Trade: The Canadian government must immediately halt all military exports to and from Israel by implementing a two-way arms embargo. This action is crucial to prevent further escalation of violence and uphold Canada’s commitment to international law.
  • Revocation of Existing Permits: The government must revoke any existing permits that allow for the continued export of Canadian-made weapons and components to Israel. The ICJ’s findings highlight the need for Canada to ensure that its exports do not contribute to violations of international law.
  • Increased Transparency: Canada must enhance transparency regarding the export of weapons and components, particularly those shipped to the United States and subsequently re-exported to Israel. This measure is essential to prevent indirect support for the illegal occupation.

CMPAC encourages all Canadians to participate in the Arms Embargo Now campaign by contacting their MPs through phone calls, emails, or social media to demand an end to the Canada-Israel arms trade.
