The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC) is proud to have played a role in the recently published “Police Governance and Human Rights: Insights from the Peel Police Service Board’s Governance and Human Rights Committee Community Consultations”. This comprehensive report, released by the Peel Police Service Board (PPSB), highlights the collaborative efforts of community leaders, human rights advocates, and other stakeholders to address systemic challenges in policing through a human rights lens.

About the Report and Consultations

Since 2019, the PPSB has prioritized integrating human rights into police governance as part of its broader mandate under Ontario’s Human Rights Project. The Governance and Human Rights (GHR) Committee, formed in 2022, spearheaded this effort, engaging communities in consultations between September 2023 and February 2024. These sessions explored critical issues such as systemic racism, hate crimes, cultural competency, and community trust.

The report synthesizes the voices and lived experiences of diverse stakeholders, presenting actionable insights to strengthen police governance, foster community trust, and uphold human rights principles. CMPAC contributed significantly to this dialogue, with our Executive Director, Khaled Al-Qazzaz, sharing key perspectives during one of the consultation sessions. His contributions underscored the critical role of artificial intelligence in combating online hate while respecting human rights.

CMPAC’s Commitment

CMPAC remains dedicated to advocating for policies that promote equity and justice. Our participation in these consultations aligns with our mission to address systemic discrimination and ensure the protection of marginalized communities. Through this partnership with PPSB, we helped advance meaningful strategies to improve police governance and build a safer, more inclusive Peel Region. We encourage our supporters to explore the report and learn about the progress being made to foster fairness, accountability, and trust within the Peel Region.
