March 10th, 2025, Oakville, ON – The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC) is gravely concerned about Israel’s continued aggression against Palestinians in Gaza, despite the ceasefire agreement in place. Instead of honouring commitments to de-escalation, Israel has intensified its violations, blocking life-saving aid, prolonging negotiations, and using starvation as a tool of collective punishment. These actions are not only inhumane but also clear breaches of international law. The Canadian government has a responsibility to respond forcefully to these violations and take immediate steps to hold Israel accountable.

In the weeks following the January 19, 2025, ceasefire, Israel has committed at least 962 violations – averaging 23 per day – including the killing of at least 116 Palestinian civilians, including children, and wounding at least 490 others, as reported by Palestine’s representative to the UN. The ongoing blockade has worsened the humanitarian crisis, with hospitals running out of medical supplies and aid convoys repeatedly denied access. The UN and international organizations have warned that famine is imminent, as Israel continues to weaponize food and water. Despite announcing plans to engage in truce and prisoners-exchange negotiations, Israel has delayed participation far beyond the agreed timeline. This ongoing delay, coupled with continued ceasefire violations, further undermines any chance for a peaceful resolution and highlights Israel’s non-compliance with the terms of the agreement.

The current and incoming Canadian government to be formed by Mark Carney, the new Liberal party leader, must take urgent action to address these violations. CMPAC calls for the following immediate steps:

  1. Utilize diplomatic channels to enforce the ceasefire and advance peace negotiations. Canada must pressure Israel to uphold the ceasefire, prevent further military aggression, and engage in good-faith negotiations toward a lasting resolution.
  2. Condemn the use of starvation as a weapon and demand unrestricted humanitarian access. The government must denounce Israel’s blockade and work with international partners to ensure immediate and unhindered delivery of aid to Gaza.
  3. Hold Israel accountable for ceasefire violations. Canada must actively support international efforts to investigate and document Israel’s breaches and push for legal consequences for those responsible.
  4. Fulfill its moral and humanitarian obligations to Gaza. Canada must increase humanitarian assistance and support efforts to rebuild Gaza’s healthcare, infrastructure, and essential services.

The international community cannot remain silent while Palestinians in Gaza are subjected to continued atrocities. CMPAC urges the Canadian government to take decisive action, uphold international law, and ensure that those responsible for these violations are held to account.
