Canadians Look Forward to A Government of Principle and Action
The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the members of the newly appointed federal cabinet. This moment marks a potential turning point for Canada — one that we, alongside many across the country, approach with cautious optimism.
We welcome the signs of change visible in this new government. Four candidates endorsed by CMPAC’s MuslimsVote.ca campaign have been appointed to cabinet, reflecting the growing political engagement of Muslim communities and the government’s recognition of diverse voices. We also note the election of two Members of Parliament who signed the Vote Palestine pledge and made clear, principled commitments to advancing justice for Palestinians. These developments signal a government that has the opportunity — and responsibility — to govern with integrity, inclusion, and moral clarity at its core.
At the same time, our optimism comes with clear expectations.
The Muslim community across Canada is looking not only for a shift in tone, but a meaningful change in direction. This must be a government defined by principled leadership and tangible action — not only carefully managed messaging. The first 100 days of this mandate are a critical window to set that tone and course of action. CMPAC will be looking for measurable progress on the pressing issues and policies that matter to our communities: an end to Canada’s arms transfers to Israel; the recognition of Palestinian statehood; the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza; strong federal action to address anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim racism; and a consistent, human-rights-based approach to foreign policy.
We will be closely reviewing the mandate letters issued to ministers to assess whether they reflect the values and commitments expressed during the election. We expect to see alignment between public commitments and policy priorities — particularly from ministers who have earned the trust and support of our communities.
This is a government that inherits both opportunity and urgency. The coming months will test its resolve to lead with courage, uphold international law, respect human rights, and advance structural change at home and abroad. CMPAC remains committed to engaging this government constructively and holding it accountable to the principles of justice, equity, and human rights.
