Justice for Hayfa Abdelkhaleq: Stand Up for Accountability and Equality

In May 2024, Hayfa Abdelkhaleq, a Muslim woman, had her hijab forcibly removed in an assault outside Ottawa City Hall during a Palestinian flag-raising ceremony. Despite the clear nature of the attack, the Crown dropped charges against the perpetrator, Lorna Bernbaum, undermining justice and equality for all Canadians.

  1. Public Review of the decision to drop charges.
  2. Transparency in hate-crime guidelines.
  3. Clear Definitions of Islamophobia and Anti-Palestinian Racism.
  4. Training for Crown Attorneys on these issues.
  5. Adoption of Findings from the latest reports on marginalized groups’ rights.
