CMPAC Supports ICLMG’s Call for Extended Scrutiny of Bill C-70

The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council (CMPAC), in solidarity with the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) and its supporting signatories, co-signed a joint letter raising significant concerns over the expeditious review process of Bill C-70, the Countering Foreign Interference Act, by the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. The said letter underscores the urgency of a comprehensive examination of the bill’s provisions, as rushing the process risks undermining fundamental rights and freedoms protected by the Charter. It highlights the far-reaching impacts of the proposed legislation on national security, intelligence, and civil liberties, including heightened surveillance and limitations on freedom of expression and association. ICLMG and its supporting signatories call for an extended period of study to ensure thorough deliberation and consideration of the bill’s implications. Access the full letter below.
