Oakville – July 27, 2024, CMPAC is disappointed by the joint statement issued by the Prime Ministers of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, following the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) July 19, 2024, Advisory Opinion. This opinion declares Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and equates its practices to a systematic apartheid regime of racial segregation and exploitation, emphasizing violations of Palestinian self-determination and international humanitarian laws. For a comprehensive understanding of the ICJ opinion, please read CMPAC’s full analysis and recommendations here

While the Prime Ministers’ statement calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and condemns Hamas, it undermines itself by conspicuously failing to address the extensive and ongoing violations of international law by Israel, as clearly outlined in the ICJ’s Advisory Opinion. By not addressing the ICJ findings, the statement perpetuates a one-sided narrative that ignores the genocide and the documented abuses faced by Palestinians. This selective approach not only distorts the reality on the ground but also fails to address the fundamental issues of justice and human rights that are at the core of this conflict.

Additionally, the ICJ’s Advisory Opinion emphasizes the importance of respecting Palestinians’ right to self-determination. This right includes the freedom for Palestinians to determine their own political, economic, and social systems without external interference. It is essential that the international community upholds this principle by refraining from dictating or influencing how Palestinians choose to govern themselves and select their leadership. Recognizing and supporting this fundamental right is crucial for achieving a fair and lasting resolution to the conflict. While the statement advocates for a two-state solution and urges Israel to consider international concerns, it falls short by not recognizing Palestinian statehood. Moreover, in emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense, it is equally important to uphold Palestinians’ right to resist occupation as enshrined in international law.

Furthermore, the statement also fails to demand concrete actions in response to ICJ’s recommendations. Without explicit calls for Israel to comply with international legal standards, the statement’s appeal lacks the necessary weight and clarity. This omission is particularly troubling given the documented evidence of Israel’s continued genocide, settlement expansion, home demolitions, and the imposition of a blockade on Gaza, all of which are violations of international law. The statement’s focus on condemning Iran and Hizballah for regional tensions detracts from the primary issue: Israel’s systemic violations that have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.

CMPAC urges the Canadian Prime Minister to adopt a more balanced and principled stance. This includes fully endorsing the ICJ findings, unequivocally holding Israel accountable for its violations, and reaffirming his government’s support for Palestinian rights in accordance with international law. A true commitment to peace and justice requires addressing these systemic injustices head-on, ensuring that all parties are held to the same standards of accountability, and fostering an environment where genuine peace and reconciliation can be achieved.
